TOY: Hydraulic assist steering
I was talking to my local parts guy (aka my dad) about doing hydraulic assist
steering on my truck, using an AGR modified box, high volume pump, and ram.
He mentioned that early model ford pickups(f150-f350) and mustangs (early
70's) had hydraulic assist steering using an actator valve mounted in place
of the tie rod end, and a hydralic ram, and used this instead of conventional
power steering. The fact that a remanufacured actuator and ram are only $300
for the pair, plus a higher volume pump and new power steering lines(have to
tee off the pressure and return side of the line for the ram and actuator)
and two short hydraulic hoses to go from the actuator to the ram, I'm
thinking this whole mess would only cost about $600 to do. Vs. the $1300 All
Pro kit this looks rather attractive. Any comments?
Thanks
