I have recently installed the Detroit locker, (187SL-61B) which has been sitting in
a box
in my garage for over a year. I was inspired to install it myself, after reading
several write ups. (Eric Bibelheimer's, and Scott Wilson's to name a few)
The install went well.
I transferred my ring gear over to the locker case. (that was fun!) I had to cook
the ring for 30 minutes on a cookie sheet in the oven at 200°. My wife was not too
happy about that. That step is not mentioned in any of the write ups. It was in the
Toyota manual. I set my backlash to 0.006 in.
Now my question.
When the locker kicks in after a turn, I can feel the rear of my 4Runner shift to
the side.
Is this normal. Please describe how the locker reacts on the dry pavement?
I tested it out this weekend on the mud. Can you say "rooster tail"? What a
difference!
I would have normally been sunk in the babys%#t mud, but my 4Runner danced right
through
the mud and muck. I had to go through about 50' of cat tail swamp. No
problem...until it was time
to wash it.
