RE: TOY: Engine swaps in CA?
There's some question as to the legality of that, but I've never heard of
anyone having a problem with it.
The trick is whether the HiLux is classified a light light duty truck or a
car. Light light duty is less than 6000 GVRW. I can't remember if it's
Cali or Fed regs that class it as a car or a LLDT. If it's a car, then any
car engine is legal, if it's a truck then you start getting into the grey
area.

The engine does NOT have to be out of a truck.
