I see absolutely no reason for the Supra swap to not be legal in CA.
The engine does NOT have to be out of a truck. I believe you are not
supposed to put a truck engine in a car (unless that engine also happened
to be used in a car somewhere too), but a car engine in a truck is fine.
Maybe that's where you are confused...?
The main concerns are that the engine must be the same year or newer & it
must be installed with all smog equipment that the doner vehicle had (all
in working order of course).
