TOY: oil change intervals; was: Toy test
Didn't see this come through the first time so I'll rewrite it:
I change my oil according to the color. When it gets black I change it.
In the military the Hummers have vampire pumps to pump out a sample of oil,
the oil is then sent to a lab to analyze (for metal dust, coolant,
whatever), according to the results its decided whether the vehice needs an
oil change, motor work, or nothing.
Changing oil on mileage intervals is ok. But its not a completely accurate
gauge of oil 'wear'. While offroading, you likely contaminate oil as much in
1 mile as in 20 highway miles(or more). A hour counter like on machinery
would be more accurate.
Oil should be changed when its dirty. I go by color. If this is a bad method
let me know. Thanks,
Kerry
