I drove many, many 1988-1995 22R-E's when they were
brand new. All came factory equipped with the 88 degree #03078 thermostat.
All these engines ran hotter with the heater on and the temp gauge
would go slightly above the 1/2 mark temporarily for the first 5 miles of driving
in cold weather with the heater on. This behavior is 100% normal
and 100% non-harmful as many 400,000 mile owners can testify.
I figure Toyota engineered this "run hotter with the heater on"
characterictic into the 03078 thermostat to enhance heater performance
in cold weather.
If an owner doesn't like to see the temp gauge over the halfway mark
a simple solution is to use the #03083 82 degree turbo charged 22R-E thermostat
http://www.saber.net/~monarch/thermostat.jpg The design of this thermstat
is exactly the same as the 03078 and the only difference is the temp
opening rating. The 03083 also was the factory original stat for nearly
all '75-80 20R engines and '70-'74 18R pickup engines.
I don't have my parts book handy, but if I remember correctly,
the 03070 thermostat was for the Corolla T series engine or some
other car engine - never for a 20R/22R series engine. The parts book
specifies the 03078 for ALL 1981-95 22R series engines except
the turbochsrged model for which it specifies the 03083. As I mentioned
in a previous post, I've used the 03083 without problems for most of
my '92 22R-E's (non turbocharged) 398,000 miles.
