If the light is going out, then the field is energizing and the alt is
back-feeding (charging) that wire. Since it's taking more and more RPM
to charge I guessing that the field exciter voltage is falling off.
Have you tried replacing the regulator ? If that had no effect, check
the entire length of the field wire, sounds like it is slowly getting
cut or mashed by something. Somehow the field wire is increasing it's
resistance thereby reducing the exciter voltage which in turn requires
more RPM to produce power.
