I just did this on my 89 4Runner. It's like having a new tranny. The shifter
has about 1/8" of play in it, instead of the 1" or so it had before. Now you
hear clickety-click... click-click every time you shift. It's friggin'
sweet!
The part numbers in that article for the bushing and seat will work (We
should both have the W56 tranny.) but the diagram is a little off. The
shifter boot on my tranny (I shredded it getting it off) was shaped like a
football with the pointy end cut off, but the V6 tranny in that diagram has
a round boot.
If I were you, I'd do this thing NOW. The results are excellent, it costs
like $12. The article says it's not sure which part to replace, so I got
them both - which was a good thing, since both the seat and bushing were
SHOT TO HELL in my tranny. The bushing had cracked all the way through! You
pull your center console, undo 6 phillips head screws, undo 4 more screws,
and pull the shifter straight up. Then replace the parts and put it all back
together. It took me about 10 minutes, but I had my interior gutted of
everything but the seats at the time.
