If there is a body lift then it might be the shifter getting bumped back by
the floor... if not then there is a bushing that I think those ride on that
might be bad... from what I understand, they are cheap and easy to
replace...

My 87 runner 5 spd is popping out of 1st gear. This is
not a synchro issue, what I mean is if I hold the
shifter up it will stay in gear fine no matter how
much I torque it up. But if I just put it 1st gear and
do not hold it most times it will pop out. 
I was told my someone that there is a gasket that
might be able to be replaced?? Anyone know if this is
true or what I can do.
