TOY: voltage regulator on alternator

So, I had to replace my alternator the other day.  Stopped charging,
then blew my 80A fusible link, very fun.  I think its the regulator that
shorted out.  Every place I call wants pretty good money for the
regulator.  Anyone take one of these apart? Can it be fixed?  Damn
checker charged me $55 for a core, haven't taken it in yet, on the
alternator and $95 for a remanufactured alternator.  I happen to have an
alternator off a nissan laying around in the garage...  So can I fix the
regulator?
