RE: TOY: noises from rear axle
You could do what I am doing...
I have a bad rear pinion seal... a bad u-joint... a bad Center Support
Bearing... a couple of missing studs... a bad (drivers side) outer seal...
possibly a bad bearing in the same place... and there is a clanking noise
occasionally when you "take up the slack" in the driveline that is coming
from the rear diff.
I am replacing everything driveline, brake, or suspension related from the
transfer case output flange back (minus tires and rims). :)
So far I am into for about $730 and all I have left are the bearings and a
couple low dollar seals... of course, that includes a couple upgrades :D
This is to demonstrate what could happen over time if you let it go whatever
the case may be... Aside from the missing studs, most of that "could" be
linked to driveline vibrations and/or poor maintenance habits...
another thanks to the previous owner.
Also, in addition to Scotts comments... which are probably dead on... your
Center Support Bearing (CSB) could possible make some funky noises if it
were bad... depending on if the rubber boot deteriorated or if the bearing
itself went bad. I think that the CSB going bad is what caused my problems
to happen more quickly then they should have as there is quite a bit of play
in the deteriorated portion of the CSB rubber housing. I had not thought
about that being bad until Scott commented as I was focusing on the Diff
rather than the whole rear driveline.
