TOY: Speedo Problems - part deux - or weird breakages...
Well - I replaced the "worn" speedo gear - and well
the "new used" one got chewed up after 30 miles.
Something else is amiss...
I R&R the trans fluid with redline. Some wear stuff in
the oil - not that unusual per se. (later I relaized
that it IS unusual - the gears in the transfer only
run in 4WD... thus the oil is usually very clean)
Put new speedo gear in and a new speedo cable. (the
old speedo cable had about 120K on it and was a little
"slack").
Now NOTHING works.. (hand bench tested the speedo with
the old cable and a drill - that wasnt the problem)
OK - tear into the back of the transfer case.
Speed gear (metal) is all chewed up - so is the oil
slinger. and so is the cover.
It looks like the output flange loosened up just enuff
to allow the ball bearing to slip out of the speedo
gear. The ball bearing chewed up stuff before it went
down the hole.
Stole good parts from the spare transfer (which has
many "welded" bolts - now busted studs in it - good
thing I have yet another parts transfer case in the 87
4Runner).
Just goes to show how slipperly redline MTL is...
BTW - doing this on a gravel driveway is no fun...
