TOY: Timing Chain & Gears

In attempting to do some preventative maintenance on my '84 22R by
replacing the timing chain, gears, guides, and tensioner before something
broke and caused me serious grief (because it was starting to get a little
noisy once the engine warmed up), I discovered that I probably have an '81
or '82 engine in my '84 because the timing gears and chain were the double
row type that only came in pre '83 engines.

I discovered all of this because the original kit I got had the typical
later model SINGLE row chain and gears, which I was told by the supplier
superceded the double row chain and gears and GUESS WHAT...?!
NOOOOOT!!!

I took it back, got a kit for an '82, and SURE ENOUGH, it was the double
row chain and gears.

Interestingly, the pre '83 kit that I got from Federal-Mogul comes COMPLETE
with DOUBLE ROW chain, gears, METAL backed guides, tensioner, seal, and
gaskets.

The Federal-Mogul part #'s are:

'81-'82 - KT-1019S (double)
'83 and up - KT-1020S (single)

The point of all this, besides information for anyone who might be
interested, is the only difference I noticed between the two kits, (besides
the obvious single/double row differences), is that the wider double row
crank gear needs a shorter oil pump drive gear to go with it.

My ? is, just out of curiosity, is there any reason that anyone knows of
why the obviously heavier duty double row gear and chain and metal backed
guides couldn't be used on a later model engine, as long as they got the
shorter oil pump drive gear to go with the wider crank gear?
