I have been doing a little more poking around on this idea now that it is
getting warmer here... if you really wanted to go all the way you could
order a titanium clevis pin for the hinges to make the doors removable!! :)

It's a great fit.  The 3/8th's pin is just slightly larger than the old pin.
As far as a tube door, I think the general concensus is that you're required
to have a 6" lip at the bottom of the body tub to keep items in.
