RE: ToySUV: '89 4Runner hesitation...
I presume its a 22RE.
Just becuase the TPS is new, does not mean its
adjusted correctly.
The job is simple but tedius and maddening with only
two hands.
Replace the philips head screws/bolts with metric
allen head bolts and use a "ball end" allen wrench.
Makes off angle tighening a cinch.
See the shop manual for the procedure.
Assuming the cap wire rotors etc are not a fault,
check the timing at idle and at rpm as per the shop
manual. You'll need to make a "jumper" to short the
check connector.
If the engine has high mileage - its possible that the
AFM is out of adjustment - however, it typicall runs
RICH, not lean (tension loosesn with time)- adjusting
the AFM might help here. This job is NOT documented in
the shop manual. Check an LC engineering catalog or a
Downey catalog.
Bear in mind that the later ("straight" throttle body)
EFI, AFAIK are backwards compared to the instructions
that I have seen from Downey, LC. Use of the Vf signal
is crucial for proper adjustment here.
But if it were my guess - timing is off..
Get a dial back to zero light - its a fun toy to play
with when doing the timing...

I recently accuired an '89 4Runner 4 cylinder EFI. It
has a slight
hesitation at all speeds almost like it's running
lean. It has a new TPS,
plugs / wires / cap / rotor... Has anyone experienced
this and do you have
any suggestions?Barry N Payne "McGyver"Brea, CA USA
