TOY: Re: Re: Re: Transfer cases - Types?
I think i can help here! After talking with Marlin yesterday, i think i
finally understand all this stuff! ( Art you are right! :)
And David, it is worse than you thought! It sin;t weather you have EFI or
carb, it is weather you have bench seats or not! Read on!

Correct, see below for more details.
All 84-88 carbed trucks had G56 trannies, with the tcase shifter in the
tranny. This was to accommodate the bench seat! Carbed trucks were
standard trim, meaning no SR5 or deluxe so no bucket seats.
All 85-88 EFI trucks (non- turbo)had the W56, which had the shifter in the
tcase. And never had bench seats!
All 86 and 87 Turbo trucks had R151F trannies, and shifters in the tranny,
because you can get a bench seat in one. Seems strange to me that the whole
thing hinges on weather or not you have a bench seat! :)
89-95 had the W56 with the shifter in the tranny.
In my case, or cases :), i will need to take either the turbo gears out of
the turbo case and install them in the w56 case or install the w56 shifter
rods and shifter into the turbo tcase. So the whole thing will require 3
tcases to get it done! Would be easier if i just bought the 4.7 23 spline
gears and used the W56 tcase with those in it but not enough $ for that...
yet... :)
BUT, as David said, they are all convertible to shift from where you would
like so no worries!
Clear as mud now? :)
