TOY: Redoing the battery cable with a heavier guage wire
Ive done this on a 22RE, and I think its probably
similar on the V6 engines.
One the 22RE, the alt is on the drivers side and the
battery is on the passenger side. As far as I can
tell, the wire from the alt goes to the fender, and
then up and around the front of the rad to the batery.
Somewhere along the line - its integrated into other
wires. In the 22RE, there is a junction box at the
drivers side fenderwell that I guess was designed so
that you could replace a section of the heavy guage
charge wire. I think the OEM is like 10guage (A pure
guess).
To root this wire out of the harness would be a major
PITA and really is not necessary.
I upgraded the charge wire to 2 guage welding cable.
I had the stuff made up by Wrangler Power Products,
but you can do this w/o them.
I simply disconnectd the alt power wire and placed HD
shrink wrap over the lug. This allows retro fit if
necessary (like Im gonna sell the 4Runner eh?).
I then ran the 2 gugae cable from the alt to the pos
lug on the battery.
Obviously the alt lug will have 12v - thus the reason
for the shrink wrap. I also tywrapped the cable to the
new battery lug and left the OEM "hood" on the cable
to protect it further (I put a new hood on the 2 guage
wire).
Later I upgraded the starter cable (thats easier to
peel out of the OEM harness as its shorter) as well as
the batt to engine ground and the batt to fender
ground and the cyl head to firewall strap.

Does anyone know if I can replace the positive and
ground battery cables on my 91 V6 3.0 4runner toa
higher gauge like a 4 or a 2?
The dealer said that I would have to replace thewhole
wiring harness...

Well, I think the reason he said this is because the
aux power lead off the
cable is integrated into the harness - Simply cut the
lead at the battery
connection and get a replacement 2 or 4 ga power lead
and most will have a
crimp terminal just for this purpose. Strip and crimp
and you're done.SNIP
