TOY: some suggestions for: V6 headgasket - costs to do-it-yourself repair?
==> Hey David,
if you do buy the '88 V-6 4Runner let me know and I'll photo copy
the relevant pages from my Toyota repair manual for you. :o )
***Off-Road.Com Toyota 4X4 list - real time mode ***
I am planning to look into buying an 88 4Runner with a V6 that the owner says
is losing coolant to the rate of a quart or so each week - and he is still
driving it daily.
==> The head may be warped. There is a possibility of the cylinder(s) of which
coolant has leaked into being "scored" on the cylinder walls.
What am I looking at to replace the headgasket myself on this baby, and is
there anything else to watch out for or replace at the same time?
==> Thermostat, water pump, and possibly the timing belt would be some
good "preventative" maintenance items to replace at the same time.
Anyone have a rough estimate for what the parts would cost, me doing the
labor myself?
==> I *figure* you will save about $1,400 in labor costs.
Do you plan to use OEM Toyota parts or after market parts?
That would be the determining factor on the do-it-yourself Toyota
v-6 headgasket replacement cost. HTH

Dee
