Paul:
-When the slip yolk or double cardon on the front propeller shaft get worn,
they tend to rattle and thunk
-When your kingpin bearings disintegrate you get rattling and possibly some
clunking
-I had an odd thunking noise which went away coincidentally when I removed
the bicycle pump that is the steering stabilizer.. that one was a thunk that
you could get by cranking the wheel back and forth while rolling along
slowly or stopped
-I had a squeal which would hang around for a few days after wheeling and
then go away.. come back after wheeling.. this was the centre bearing and i
think it was aggrivated with the driveline wind up that happens when turning
in 4wd.
-I had another squeal which was the anti-rattle spring on the driver front
shoes had deformed and was rubbing on the rotor.
-I now have a clacking sound which i think has to do with not having an
anti-rattle spring on the driver front shoes.. (go figure)
-a bad growl when lugging the engine in 4wd (slack in the front propeller
shaft)
-a quiet chirping noise after driving through deep water.. (okay, this
wasn't me but a friend who unknowingly had a mouse living in the right
wheelwell of his 4runner)
-i had this fun one when I first got my truck, a thump which occurred when
after accelerating, dropping the throttle.. this was because of
undercoating between a couple of the leaves on the rear springs.. one of
the ones to reduce axlewrap.. it was sticking them together and when I
dropped the throttle, they would snap apart..

I suppose it could be your tie-rod ends too..

>Scott was your noise only in 4 wheel or not?
Most of my sounds would happen in either.

I'm not a hardcore wheeler, but I'm kinda skeptical of these brass busings.
Unless you really wore the snot out of them, I can't see how you'd get any
kind of complaint from them.

Nah, I think your problem is elsewhere..

If you have an ifs truck, I've heard some worn upper A arm ball joints make
some pretty spectacular rattles and clunks...

that about does it for me.
