TOY: Hybrid spring packs

Those of you that have built hybrid spring packs.  I was wondering what was
being used to prep and paint the leaves before reassembly.  I picked up some
Mazda 2WD springs and am getting them ready for installation on the rear of
my truck.  Any hints or suggestions?
