Does the engine run right now? If not what's wrong with it? Personally $500
for a rebuildable unit that doesn't run at all is a little steep IMHO... I'd
do it in 2 steps if it runs at all - swap the wiring and 'stuff' over and get
it running first then rebuild it.
Check the intake plumbing for oil coating (indicating bad turbo seals - semi
expensive on the toyota CT style turbos. I would say that the only
real 'threat' to a turb on water/mud is dunking a cherry hot exhaust casing in
ice cold water (i.e. running hard on boost then dipping it into the cold water,
but the 'threat' should be only a little more concern than a regular exhaust
manifold....
As for low-end grunt out of one - that's simple - you either need more static
compression or get the boost on at a lower RPM - the first is easy - run the
N/A ~9:1 compression parts on the engine and the next is a little harder - free
up the exhaust to allow quicker spooling, and run a GOOD cam... Then it's time
to think about a modified T3 setup - could set it up and have boost around 1100
RPM if you want (but usually that limits top end and/or spins the turbo awful
fast up there)
