The #1 cause of a loud engine is excessively loose valve
clearances. The setting that quiets the engine is
.007"/011" with heavy drag (stiff sliding fit) on the
feeler gauge blades with the engine fully warmed up.
This setting is slightly tighter than the factory spec of
.008/.012" slight drag, but absolutely won't hurt
anything. In fact, new Toyotas came from the factory
in Japan set at anywhere from .005/.009 to .007/.011
but never at .008/.012.
The .007"/011" setting also is great for good power
and fueleconomy if used in combination with the
factory specsettings for ignition timing and spark plug
gaps.
