TOY: Re: Land Anchors

Some random thoughts on the topic:

Can you wrap chain around those rocks, or are they too small or slanted to offer an anchor point ? If they're too small, how about several of them at a time ?
Perhaps you can dig out on the far side of the rocks enough to form a 'hook' to keep the chain in place.

A trick my dad used to use when he was stuck in sand in one of L.A. County's Flood Control 4x4s was to put the spare on the ground, hammer the tire iron thru
the center hole of the wheel into the ground at an angle back towards the vehicle. He attached the winch cable to the iron over the tire, but as low as he could
go. Perhaps this might work for you in some places ?

I've thought about making stakes for a Horseshoes pit in remote camps. I have access to what is known in the oil patch as 'Sucker Rod'. This is the rod used in
oil wells to pull the crude up the hole. It's about 1" in diamter and made from some really, really good stuff. Tensile strength is quite high as you might
imagine. My plan for the Horseshoes pit was to use some of this rod for the stakes. My thought was to weld a heavy chunk of steel to one end of a thick walled
tube to make a driver (fence post driver of ages). Place the stake and hammer it in with the driver. Then I planned to drill a hole near the top of the stake
and slot the tube near the bottom. Place the driver over the stake, align holes and insert a pin (Craftsman Phillips Screwdriver ?). Reverse hammer to pull out
the stake.
