The key is that it only leak a little or not at all around the tail gate. My '67 Ranchero did marginally better with the gate down than it did with it up. That
was because it was forward sloped and had a huge gap along the bottom.
Since the gate weighs that much I suspect that you'd net zero change, posibly even hurt your mileage by adding it.
