TOY: RE: Towing an '84 4Runner ?
As easy as it is to unbolt a Driveshaft I would just pop the thing out and
throw it back in when you get there. It is the surest way of avoiding wear.
My wife has pulled the drive shaft on our truck so anyone can do it, unless
there is a difficulty with 4Runners that I am unaware of.
The coat hanger would work... but, what if one breaks? You definitely don't
want to drag a drive shaft down the highway. Not to mention I have heard
nasty stories about driveshafts getting disconnected at both the diff and
the trans.

Subject: TOY: Towing an '84 4Runner ?
Hi Folks,
I plan to tow a 1984 Toyota 4Runner, 22R with 5 speed manual transmission.
230 miles tomorrow, (Saturday), the method planned
is with a Tow Dolly in which the front wheels are secured to the dolly and
the
rear wheels
remain in contact with the Pavement. I heard somewhere for a long distance
haul
of this type
the rear driveshaft should be disconnected to spare the bearings in the
transmission.
Seeing that with the transmission, in Neutral the rear axles are still
turning
and therefore the
rear driveshaft will also be turning thus causing wear on the trans. where
the
DS enters it.
My question is: Should just I remove the 4 bolts that secure the DS to the
rear
Diff. and
then using some coat hanger wire secure the DS to the undercarriage?
All suggestions, Hints, Clues would be great.
Thanks,
Dee
