TOY: Ring and Pinion Ratio

I have always heard that you could tell a r&p gear ratio by jacking up one
tire, spinning the driveshaft and counting the number of times that it went
around until the tire had made one complete revolution.

Well, unless my 4Runner has 2.25 gears in it, I don't think this works!

Any clue what the deal is?
