RE: TOY: Birfield Joint or Hub

OK, I would encourage you to go for it! You really
need to know how to change the birfield if you are
going to wheel it and there's nothing hard to
it...just keeping track of all the various pieces :^)

We've really been talking about two jobs...(1)getting
in far enough to R&R the birfields and (2)completely
rebuilding the axle by totally removing the knuckles
and replacing the knuckle bearings. If you just want
to find the clunking noise and check your wheel
bearings you can get by with (1). If you want to
restore everything, get rid of the drool from the
knuckles that drains down the inside of your front
tires and make sure the knuckle bearings that allow
you to turn from side to side are perfect do (2).

Neither one requires a lot of special tools or
techniques. Basic hand tools, sockets, a hub socket
and a 1/2" torque wrench would be nice...Oh yeah a
brass drift helps with getting those cone washers out.

Check out Rober Browns page, he has a pretty detailed
write up on the rebuild process and also several links
to other rebuild pages.
