Re: TOY: Birfield Joint or Hub
Sounds like a birfield...the hubs usually don't go
bad, and since yours is still locking and unlocking it
sounds like its OK...of course you'll be able to see
as you pull it off to get to the birfield :^)
You really don't want to drive it with a broken
birfield because if it has grenaded into lots of
little shards it can lock up that wheel, even if the
hub is unlocked...been there, done that!
If you don't carry spares, this is really the one
thing you need to carry. I try to carry two, one with
the short axle shaft (passenger) and one with the long
axle shaft (drivers) that way you don't have to worry
about the condition of the splines or mess with
knocking the old one off and playing with the little
retaining clip on the trail. Just pull out the broken
pieces and slip in the new birfield & shaft. Some are
faster but it takes me a little over an hour to be
running again. You can pick up used birfields for $50
from All Pro or from Marlin...salvage prices are
comparable to that also.
