No Scott, your thinking is correct. For the IFS front end, you drop the
whole front housing. There is no 3rd member to pull out of an axle
housing, on the IFS front end the 3rd member basically IS the axle
housing. Drop the driveshaft, unbolt the CV axles, push them out away
until the bolts clear the flanges of CVs, then undo the 3 big bolts
holding the housing in.

Pushing the CV's out enough to clear the bolts is the biggest problem, but
can be done without having to pop a ball joint or other such drastic
measures (I've personally done it on a 95 4runner). Once you have the
housing out, take some time to push all the bolts out of the drive
flanges, grind off the splines of the bolts, and reinstall. This way you
can just slip the housing back into place without the trauma of trying to
get the CV's to clear the bolts.
