RE: Toyota 4x4 Mailing List V1 #44

I would have to agree on the cost of the springs David!!! I was told that
All-Pro springs would be much cheaper like $300.00? Yeah... after my D44 is
ready to be put in looks like I'll run the Rancho 4" Wagoneer springs.....$
140.00 a set.

Subject: hours needed to replace timing chain?

I have decided to take a job in Colorado and will be moving soon (I am
in Utah now). I really want to take my 4Runner out there but the chain
guides have broken and I am running out of time before I have to go.

What I am wondering is this: Is replacing the timing chain on my '85
something I can do on a long Saturday or should I allow two days? Any
opinions?

I can't really have it in pieces when moving time comes. Right now it
still runs well enough to drive onto a trailer. If I have to I can take
my pickup out there and move the 4Runner with my household stuff later.

Thanks for any help,
Allan Davis

The last one I did (a couple years ago now) was driven to my house at
about 6am, and was on the road again, with a new timing chain, quickie
valve job, a couple new U-joints, a new oil-pan gasket, and a transfer
case seal or two, by 2pm that same day. You should be able to do just
the timing chain in a day, no problem, as long as you have all the parts
and tools you need before you tear into it.

Subject: Centramatic's Continuous Wheel Balancers

Roger Brown wrote a real nice article on ORC this month. I was wondering
about something. Roger said he had to grind some metal off of the
caliper. He has the original solid rotors with the solid axle calipers.
Does this same bit of metal have to be ground off on IFS calipers with
vented discs? I am a little leary of grinding metal away. This appears
to be over an area of the caliper that is a fluid passage and connects
the two pistons. Actually, when I install All-Pro's spacer kit, this
would be a mute issue. Now, if only I could get in touch with All-Pro.

I got through to All-Pro. I didn't get to speak to Chris G. but to Jon
(the owner). Hopefully, I will get the Spacer Kit and the rebuild kit
soon. I need to rebuild my axle in time for GSMTR. Jon was nice enough
to give me the 15% discount on the Spacer Kit. I tried ordering this
past Friday and Saturday but I think everyone at All-Pro was gone to the
4Runner Jamboree. I wonder if they give a TLCA discount? I forgot to
ask.

Subject: Putting FJ80 knuckles on a minitruck axle...

Just something I have been thinking about. I have this wide FJ80 axle
(62.8" WMF = Track). I know you can get your axle ball/knuckles cut off
and rewelding to correct for the pinion angle. Is it possible to take a
FJ80 ball/knuckle and weld it onto a minitruck axle? The FJ80 axles are
the same size as the minitruck axles. The minitruck axles might need
longer axle shafts to work with the FJ80 knuckles. I can cut down the
FJ80 axles for this and get them resplined. The other hassle is the
steering. The FJ80 has the tie rod behind the axle. A shorter axle might
mean that the tie rod arms might hit the diff. Ofcourse, you must use a
high pinion diff. It will sort of work out like a MiniFJ80 axle but you
get the benefits of huge birfields. Someone in our club is trying to do
this with a FJ40 front axle. I think I will wait to see if he can do it
first. He is a machinist too.

Listers,

I know this is a long shot, but is anyone traveling through Pennsylvania to
the NYC area anytime soon? There is a fellow lister in Claysburg, PA with
some parts that I'd like to buy, but shipping would make the deal not worth
my while. I am in Connecticut, but would be willing to travel into NY to
meet someone if they were willing to pick them up for me in Claysburg.

Thanks,

Just FYI, when steering knuckles are "cut and turned" as in a Toyota
application, the entire knuckle end is not cut clean off. The steering
knuckle "balls" are slipped into the outer housing which is the portion
that is cut, usually at the weld. Once the outer housing is cut, the
knuckles are free to be rotated. I'm not saying that your idea won't
work Karl, but just be aware if you call around to a few LC or
Toyota-specific shops. Cutting the ends off themselves gets a bit more
complicated, but it can be done as in the case of Dana housing and such.
I'm sure your machinist friend is more than capable of handling this.

Subject: Spring prices - through the roof?

I was just checking out All Pro's web site and they new springs they are
offering...

What is with the prices(not just All Pro, but Alcan, National, etc.)? I
just
can't possibly see how these springs are so great, and a worthy of the
prices. Am I missing something, or does $700 for a set of 5" springs seem
"normal" to everyone but me?
I guess I will keep buying used spring packs and building my own... I
probably have 20 sets of used springs laying around, and still don't have
$700 tied up in them all ;)
