Re: TOY: Re: Axle widths
Yeah, I think I remember reading a post a while back about that. It
sounded a lot more involved than what I am thinking it would take for the
T100 axle. I'd check the archive, but I don't think there is one for this
list yet.
FJ80 rear pros: full floater(?), disk brakes, bigger & stronger parts all
around (I assume).
FJ80 rear cons: loss of ground clearance under the pumpkin (I assume), you
don't have any of the parts yet, custom axle shafts necessary, overall cost
due to custom shafts & more complex housing mod, and you would need to buy
an entire axle including electric locker (although you seem to have a knack
for finding that kind of stuff for next to nothing!)
T100 rear pros: no custom shafts, you already have the locker, more ground
clearance (I assume), less complex housing mod, probably cheaper overall
and cheaper to repair if/when necessary.
T100 rear cons: less strength (at least probably the R&P), not
full-floater, drum brakes.
To use the T100 axle, you would just need the complete T100 axle (minus 3rd
member), an '86-up 8" axlehousing (a cheap bent one would probably even
work, or you could use the pre-modified-for-a-locker one you have now if
it's the newer version), and you already have the e-locker.
To use the FJ80 rear axle you would need the entire rear axle including
e-locker, plus the custom axleshafts. Also, James S. is in OZ, so I don't
know if that complicates things or not.
Just more stuff to think about I guess (as if you're not already).
IMHO, the T100 axle mod looks like it might be a good choice. Of course, I
don't know what your ultimate plans are for this truck and maybe you "need"
all the extra strength you can get. I think mini-truck rear axle failure
is pretty rare (especially with stock-ish motors), even with the smaller
R&P. I also think most R&P failure is due to being throttle-happy and
bouncing trying to get up an obstacle, etc.
