JPOR: Custom Tie Rods

I am about to build my own tie rods and would like any inf. others can
supply.  First, I want to shorten some full sized Chevy tie rod tubes. 
I figure I can leave the left hand thread 7/8-18 end alone, cut the tube
to length and then tap the cut end with a 7/8-18 tap.  Anyone done
this?  Any sources for a 7/8-18 tap?  Next, I need to make a tie rod for
3/4 16 tie rod ends.  I already have a 3/4-16 standard tap and it takes
a 11/16 hole.  Any sources for a 3/4-16 left hand tap?  How about some
DOM tubing that will tap directly to this size?  Any links to common DOM
sizes?  Thanks much, Jeff
