I have cut and welded my steering shaft in my old Landcruiser, and have built
several for race cars. The trick is to find a tube pipe to sleeve over the
splice.
You can cut the shaft down, sleeve it and weld it up. A trick I used to help
stiffen it all up is to drill 1/4" holes, randomly, in the sleeve material so
you can see the original shaft. Then fill the holes up with weld.
Local speed/race shops should have sleeve materials, as well as weld in
u-joint (with or with out spline cuts) to replace worn parts.
