JPOR: steering column

anybody ever cut and welded on a steering shaft? i'd like to shorten my
steering column in my 74 cj-5. the upper end of course is splined for the
steering wheel. the lower end, i can't tell much without tearing it down. if
welding is not an option, could it be cut at the bottom and remachined to
match? from looking in catalogs it seems that the bottom end of the shaft is
possibly flat on one side, giving it a half-moon shape when looked at from
end on. is this correct? any info would be appreciated.
