JPOR: Re: Used gear set questions
I wouldn't think you would want to use a gear with cracks in it, especially
if you can see them without magnaflux. If you really want to have it
checked, find a place that has an actual magnaflux booth or a coil.
Carquest likely has a yoke. The booths have a demag feature and they use a
liquid which is better than the powder. The coils can be used to both
magnetize and demagnatize the part. Also you could use die penetrant
instead of magnaflux. Some machine shops and heat treaters have booths.
Nearly all large manufacturing facilities have one or more (You would have
to know somebody who works there to get them to do it for you). Also check
in the phone book or the internet for a non-destructive testing service in
your area. They should definitely be able to do it.
