JPOR: 97 XJ engine codes ??

SLIGHTLY off topic .... but I could use some help.

Check engine light came on in the wife's 97 XJ with 4.0

I've heard it hashed several times that the newest XJs no longer have
codes.  However, by chance .... I think I found something.

I held down the odometer reset button on my wife's Jeep while
restarting.  And everything on the dash started to run a "course"

The tach methodically moved from rpm to rpm ( 5, 3, 1, 6, 0 )
The Speedo did the same thing (45, 70, 30, etc)
can't recall the smaller gauges.

Nothing bounced, it was a deliberate/steady swing to each number.
Could this be a "code" that D/C doesn't want to mention?
