Courtney, when we did mine recently, Nutter showed me a new trick, I'll see
if I can properly describe it. The idea is to remove only one joint at a
time, rather than 2 with the usual hammer 'n socket method.
Rest the ears of one shaft on the jaws of a vice, pound on either the fat
part of the ear or the shaft itself (though not on a bearing surface) to
pop out the top u-joint cap. Essentially, the vice is holding two arms of
the joint, so its holding the cap up as you hit the shaft down. Rotate &
do other side. For the other part of the shaft, rotate 90 degrees, and
rest the bare arms of the u-joint on the jaws. Repeat pounding. It worked
very well for us.
