JPOR: jefe's new D60 with a twist

list,
Yesterday, Bro John and I installed the D60 from his now defunct
Bronco (of '99 Warn Rock Crawling Championship fame) into my CJ8. He
is now building a rock crawling rig (wait till you see this one!
There's nothing streetable about it. ) and doesn't need anything from
his early Bronco. The D60 is 58" wide, 35 spline Mosier axled,
Cadillac disc braked, ARB'd, 4.88:1. It was not a complex install but
did have an unexpected twist. I had new pre fit spring perches, shock
mount hardware, new JCW H.D. springs, ready to go. We removed the old
55" wide AMC20 axle, brake lines, e-brake, which is easier with an
SOA. We lined up the perches, getting 2 degrees of angle difference
between the plane of the t.case output and the plane of the rr pinion
and the single cardigan driveshaft connected right up, and looks like
it may not even have to be shortened. The twist was the line up of
the rear driveshaft. The D60 pig looks pretty much centered from the
rear, however.....Come to find out Ford, with their penchant for the
driver's side front pigs, offset the engine to the right to make room
for the front driveline. Jeep, on the other hand, with their pass
side pig, offsets the engine in the frame a couple inches the other
way. The rear driveshaft now has a compound angle (a 4 degree list to
the center from the D300 output). The rear of the pig cover hits my
NorthWest Metal Products 24 gallon gas tank just a smidge, so I'll
have to cut out the gas tank skid plate at that location and maybe
use the BFH to make some clearance at the tank. I don't have the
brake hard lines on yet, but I did drive a short distance in low/low,
which is now 130:1, (2nd gear 65:1) a nice neighborhood.
[6.69x4x4.88] It was noticeably lower than the previous 110:1. Since
it had no brakes, I simply turned off the key and it abruptly
stopped. I now have a towrig, so I'm not worried about having too-low
gears for the street. Just so I can get it up to 60mph in a pinch.
With the 4.88's, I can also go to 38's and dump the 36's with gearing
impunity. I'll wind up this project with a change of the front D44
from 4.09 to 4.88 to match the rear. Onward and upward. I'll see many
of you at Moab at Eastertime. I'll be the real slow one at the back
of the pack.
[Anyone need a built up AMC20? 4.10's/ARB/new Superior
axles/butterfly welded skidplate axle truss. Everything but the
housing is low mileage. Bulletproof.]
regards, as always, jefe
