Re: JPOR: Re: tcase & flat towing
list,
I haven't posted for a long time. Two full time jobs have made my
online time go away.
All you're really worried about flat towing with the D300 is the rear
output bearing which will spin if the rear driveshaft is still
connected. The rub is with the usual D300 hangdown the bearing is oil
starved (since the gears in the oil are not turning and throwing oil
up to the rear output bearing) and will burn up after several hours
of freeway towing. Since Loren has clocked his D300, depending on how
far, it may be that the bearing will get oil. If his case is on a
flat plane, it should be O.K. It might be that for the tow he could
overfill the t.case, enough to get the oil to the bearing. For short
periods, I just tow it. For more than say, 1/2 an hour, I always
disconnect the rear driveshaft at the pig, and wire it up to the
frame. I and some of my Jeeping buddies have left the engine idling
in gear to the t.case for an hour or two during tows when it was
inconvienient to disconnect the driveshaft.
regards, as always, jefe
