Nope, there is a pump that turns with the rear output shaft that lubes the
thing. I like to remove rear drive shaft to keep all that junk from spinning
during flat towing. But now I trailer!

I was under the impression that the NP231 didn't have a true
neutral
until '95. Prior to '95, you had to stop every 300 or so
miles and
drive around the block to lube the t-case innards.
