If you have a vaccuum disconnect front axle, you should be ok, but you want to
shift the transfer case into neutral AFTER the engine is turned off. The idea
is verify that it is in 2wd with the front axle disconnected (you should be able
to rotate the driveshaft by hand), turn off the engine, then put the transfer
case in neutral. Once it is in neutral, the front and rear driveshafts are
connected, just as in 4wd.
I don't think it would be possible for the vac disco to connect without any
vaccuum present, but perhaps someone can verify.... that would be a BAD thing,
particularly if your front wheels are attached to a tow dolly!
Mo's suggestion of pulling the rear shaft would be a definite safe way to go.
BTW, I've made the assumption here that you have a Command-trac Cherokee, not a
Select-trac.
