That would work as a *parking* brake, but in an emergency, when the main
brakes fail, it is useless.

Many Subaru cars use an emergency brake that goes to the front disc brakes.
You might be able to scavenge some parts or ideas from them, or possible
squeeze a set of Subaru calipers on the disc also, opposite the "real" brake
caliper.

Oh, and these would be the older square Subarus, the pre-Legacy/Outback
models with low-range transfer cases. My 88 GL wagon had a cable operated
cam that pushed on the back of the caliper's piston. Jerking the e-brake
handle would stop the car as quickly as the foot pedal when 4WD was engaged.

BTW, my name is Dan Pierce and I'm lurking mostly for entertainment. I
picked up a 1989 Cherokee in VG condition, but with high miles. All it
needed was carrier bearings, but now I am in the middle of replacing the
entire cooling system with a 1992 style system and the ignition is
troublesome (worn out). A Jacobs system will soon replace the stock parts.
At times it feels like I'm replacing this thing one piece at a time. :-)

As for my axles, I priced out parts for re-gearing and adding TrueTracs, but
for the $950 that that will cost me I'm now considering a more "custom" swap.
I'm not terribly hard on the truck and plan to stop with 31" tires (maybe
33's in a few years), so a nice set of Ford 9" axles would seem ideal to me.

Ah, who am I kidding. Budget constraints will likely have me swapping in
stock axles from another Cherokee (with 4.11 gears) but I can always dream,
right?

Well, back to lurking. You gear-heads are *way* deeper into the technical
end of off-roading than I am. Don't expect to hear from me very often, as
I'll have very little to add.

In Michigan, vote NO on proposal 2. Although it sounds good at first, it
basically gives veto power over any legislation to the City of Detroit. Do
you want all of Michigan to be like Detroit?
