I haven't seen that article, but I did stop by a friends older trooper
this morning as it was parked on the street and took a peak underneath. 
It had solid rotors and a caliper with a center pin type mechanical
lever for operating the emergency brake.  I didn't even look at the
pumpkin to see if it looked like a D44, but the emergency brake cable
definitely came to the center of the caliper similar to the caddy
style.  I would love to know how this caliper works, weather the
emergency brake works very well, and if regular emergency brake use is
needed to keep the regular hydraulic portion working well.  I like the
fact that the grand and explorer styles use separate hydraulic calipers
for the main brakes, but I still don't like all the components of a drum
brake in there exposed to the elements including mud and road salt! 
That sounds like a real pain in the butt to deal with and why a person
would want to go to disks in the rear in the first place!  Jeff
