You learn something new everyday.  I always wondered about those other
caliper brackets and why AMC changed over.  I thought that they were part of
a change over year.  In a way, I guess they were.  From the picture I
remember, the bracket part looked similar to the modern brakes and I thought
that the same caliper would bolt up.  Evidently not.  Thanks for the lesson.

JB, sounds like you're describing the two different kinds of CJ disc brakes.

The earlier ones (77-78) bolt to the six spindle studs and use a Bendix
caliper, just like F-150/Big Bronco.  (FWIW, Scouts are similar, but have
8-stud spindles and the banjo fitting on the caliper is bigger than the
CJ/Ford
caliper.)  

Sure, you could use one of these... but why do you think we never recommend
these for front ends?  It's because the Bendix calipers don't float nearly
as
well as the Delco two-pin calipers (GM, FSJ, 80-86 CJ) since they ride
directly
on the caliper bracket and are easy to clog up with dirt/mud.
