Re: JPOR: speading of D44 rear brakes....

Jeff;

I am going to look at one later today, although at this point I don't know
if the rear end is a 44, and with my luck it won't be. So the rest is based
on my experience watching a buddy mate ZJ disks to his D44.....

Buddy who put ZJ disks on had to machine a spacer for the mounting flange to
match the extra thickness of the caliper bracket as compared to the backing
plate of the drum brakes. This was all that was need in order to get the
bearing to seat and seal properly. This seems to be the biggest issue
regarding mating the brakes to another axle, in addition to whether the
caliper mount will match the tube end. . I'm presuming a few things:

the isuzu d44 will have an appropriate sized spacer to match the caliper
bracket, so therefore using this spacer my bearings and seal will seat and
work properly
the thickness of the rotor is not that much greater than a drum, so
therefore the change in track width will be negligible
the calipers will fit within a 15 inch wheel

basically, I'm assuming that in order to make this swap work, I will have to
buy the entire rear axle, use the spacers on the isuzu axle (with new wheel
bearings and seals) on mine, and likely have to redrill the caliper bracket
to match my housing end. In addition, the isuzu proportioning valve might
make the brakes work better than the one I have now. Assuming I could get
such a rear end at a good price, if that was all that was involved I would
be quite happy.

Chad
