RE: JPOR: Cheap axles
Well, That's what I though and read. So I ran down to the U-Pull and found a 78 or 79 Bronco with a Dana 44. Pulled it off for just $100 and brought it home. I was going to grind away the Ford mounts and add leaf spring mounts plus shorten it. Started grinding on the long side bracket when I cut through the bracket to notice that the long side was not a single tube! It's a three piece design with the Ford bracket acting similar to my YJ's Dana 30 vacuum axle disconnect bracket. I didn't measure the outer tube but I bet it's 3/8" thick.
Then I could see the inner long tube, it's only 1/8" thick, not what I want on my Jeep! Come on down and take a look or I do have pictures.
So I'm now looking for an early Dana 44 with drum brakes. I had one of those that was bent, but it had 1/2" tubes all the way through.
