Are you sure it's your steering column? Have you disconnected the
intermediate shaft and then gave the column a spin?
When I've had this happen to my Jeep it's turned out to be bad ball
joints. Twice. It was the same thing, a dry groaning sound when I
turned.
It could really be your column, but it's worth checking the ball
joints and intermediate shaft just to be sure.
