IIRC, the narrow SJ axles are about 61" wide, which is 1" wider than
YJ axles & 7" (?) wider than wide CJ axles. Even on a YJ, you have
togrind down the diff housing a bit to get the spring perch to line
up right. Since CJ frame rails are narrower than YJ's (at least in
the back -- what about the front?), you'd either need to grind even
more or outboard your springs. You'd certainly want to do all your
cutting from the long side of the axle. If you move the pumpkin in
too far (ala a wide SJ), you'll gain about 2.5-3" of tube per side,
but you have to worry about oil pan clearance.

Most of that is what I've gathered off the list. I do know for sure
(from measuring my own '77 Wag axle) that the front pinion is 8-7/8"
to the right of center, if that helps.

Yeah, it's about the 4x4s, but it's really the people
that make all of this fun. -- Cole Quinnell
Anybody want to buy a Jeep XJ Dana 44 rear axle?
