Item Description:
1981 Jeep Scrambler CJ-8

The Scrambler is the most undervalued jeep of them all, a true limited
edition classic! Produced in limited numbers over a five year period has
made this jeep potentially one of most valuable jeeps ever. There were only
27,792 produced from 1981 to 1986.

American Motors Company built the CJ-8, a 103-inch-wheelbase, that was a
stretched CJ7 with a short top and pickup bed. The CJ-8 came in hard or
soft-top models. The CJ8 was approximately 24 inches longer than the CJ7
overall and had 10 inches added to the wheelbase. The Scrambler was a very
modest seller, but an upswing in popularity in the 1990's has turned the old
CJ-8 into a very hot item with lots of room for trick modifications.

>From just behind the doors forward, the Scrambler is all CJ in appearance.
All sheet metal except the body tub is interchange with the CJ7 and late
CJ5. A massive 3" diameter roll bar mounted in the bed replaced the smaller
CJ roll bar. The pickup part of the bed measured 5 foot by 5 foot. The lost
space was due to the wheel wells and roll bar posts. Even with such a small
payload area the Scramble was rated as a 1/4 ton truck from the factory.

Virtually all of the Scramblers mechanical components are interchangeable
with the CJ5 and CJ7. The only mechanical parts that differ are those that
had to be lengthened, like the drive shaft and brake cables. The wiring to
the tail lights is slightly different and the filler tubes to the gas tank
had to be lengthened.

The Scramblers extended length had it's advantages. The weight distribution,
52% in front of the driver and 48% behind the driver delivered a much better
ride than the other CJs.

Here is an accurate honest evaluation of every component on this jeep. It
isn't perfect, but it has a lot of potential. It would be great for someone
looking to restore a unique scrambler or someone who wanted to build a bomb
proof four wheeling beast.

Engine: 258 inline six cylinder. Runs good. Odometer reads 85,485 but I
don't know if that is actual mileage. It has a universal holley two barrel
carb that I have never been able to tune very well. When the engine is cold
oil pressure runs around 50 pounds, but once it's warm it will read as low
as 5-10 pounds at idle. If the RPM goes above idle the pressure is fine.
Might just be the guage - I don't think the pressure is too low because it
doesn't smoke, knock, make any unusual noises, or burn oil. It has a leaky
valve cover gasket, and I will include a new one, but you install it. This
motor is suprisingly strong.
It was rebuilt by the previous owner and I'm not sure what all they did to
it but I do know that is is faster than any of my friend's I6 CJ's.

Transmission: This Jeep has a 4 speed tranny, I believe it is the SR4. It
pops out of Reverse and second gear does not work. First, third, and fourth
work but the tranny needs to be rebuilt. I would recomend a different
transmission though.

Transfer Case: The Dana 300 is one of the best transfer cases you can get. I
have never had a problem with it.

Axles: The front end is a Dana 30. The rear is an AMC 20. I replaced the AMC
20 axles shafts with one piece shafts ($600 installed) which are much
stronger.

Emissions: The jeep has very little in the way of functioning emissions
equipment. It will definatly not pass smog in it's current condition due to
cat converter, smog pump, etc being removed. On the plus side it goes a lot
better without that junk! :)

Frame: The frame is straight and free of serious rust.

Body: The body is straight! There is a small dent in the right front fender,
but the rest is great! It was painted not too long ago, but it must have
been a cheap job because it looks kinda crappy and there is a bit of rust in
some spots. The rust would not be difficult to remedy. There are no rust
holes or any major rust on the jeep.

Hardtop: The Jeep has a fiberglass half cab. It is in good shape. The rear
mounting brackets need to be fixed, but the side and front mounts still work
and it is pretty solid

Windows: All of the windows are clear and have no cracks or chips.

Doors: The doors are in great shape too. They are full steel hard doors with
roll down windows. The windows are intact and work great. The driver's side
lock doesn't work.

Roll bar: Scramblers came with extra beefy roll bars and this is no
exception. It is extremely solid.

Lights: All of the lights on the jeep work, except for the turn signals. The
problem is the turn signal switch in the steering column needs replaced.

Stereo: Includes used Sony AM/FM/CD deck, but deck is not installed. Jeep
has dash speakers and 6x9's behind the seats. Speakers work good, the deck
hasn't been tested.

Interior: The interior is in good condition. It has all working guages and a
Tachometer. No carpet. The driver's side seat has rips in it, but the
pasengers seat is pretty nice. The seats are high back and really
comfortable.

Tire and Wheel option:

Not included in the price of the jeep are the tires and wheels. The tires
are 33x15.50R15 TSL Super Swamper SX's. These are some bad ass tires! The
wheels are 15x10 Polished Centerline Hellcats. Tires and wheels are less
than 1yr old and were $1400 new. Also included will be a 33" buckshot mudder
spare tire. Swampers have 85%+ tread left. I will include tires and wheels
for $700 in addition to high bid price. If you choose not to purchase the
tires and wheels I will supply other tires and wheels for it.

Parts Truck Option:

My goal with this Jeep was to swap in Chevy truck running gear. I have a
1980 3/4 ton chevy 4x4 also. It has the following components that would be
prime in a scramber: 350 small block, TH350 tranny, np205 t-case, dana 60
front axle, 14 bolt rear axle. With these components the jeep would be just
about bomb proof. The Chevy truck ran when parked two years ago but will not
start now. It has 110,000 miles on it. The tranny was either rebuilt or
replaced less than 10,000 miles ago. Buyer can add additional $500 to high
bid and recieve this truck too.

The Jeep is located in South Western Oregon and anyone who would like to see
it in person will be welcome to. The jeep is driveable, but with the lack of
second gear and the poor condition of the tranny I would reccomend towing it
instead. If you live to far away to come pick it up it could be shipped.
Shipping might be expensive and will be the responsibility of the buyer. I
will require 25% of high bid be paid within 5 days of the end of the
auction. The rest should be paid and arrangments to pick up jeep should be
made within 14 days. Payment will
be in the form of Money Order or Paypal.com payment.

Unfortunatly the two pictures above are the only photographs available. A
higher resolution image is below. Please feel free to email me at
