Ok Kevin, here goes!
1st: Is it the sending unit or pick-up tube that you are talking about?
The sending unit it the float thing that sends the voltage signal to
the fuel gauge. The pick-up tube is the (hopefully) metal tube that
allows the fuel pump to suck the gas up out of the tank, and into the
carb/fi.
2nd: How far off from the bottom of the tank is the pick-up tube? It
should be pretty close, but not touching the bottom.
3rd: Are there any kinks or holes in the pick-up tube? if so, it
could be sucking air.
4th: Are there any baffles in the tank? If not, when turning, the gas
will slosh, allowing the pick-up tube to become uncovered, then
sucking air.
5th: Don't feel too bad about your YJ running out of gas at ~1/4 tank
- when my CJ was stolen, the theifs ran it out of gas, but it still
showed 1/4 full, so they though that it was broken, and left it!
6th: Just junk the whole tank and buy an Aero metal tank, in a
variety of sizes...
7th: Check out the YJ faq (Lars???) and figure out if the 15/20
gallon tank trick is applicable to you.
BTW - I won't be at work until Thursday (annual leave), so I have
plenty of free time until then to look at it.
